Its Strawberry Season in Florida!

IMG_2813.JPG

So when I thought about what I would write about today, I thought hey, include a healthy recipe utilizing seasonal fruit!

As I mentioned in my earlier post, I am challenging myself to be mindful and intentional about everything I eat. Adding natural fruits, vegetables and protein to our diet is critical. Yogurt is a wonderful food which can be high in protein and calcium. Both critical to our bones and intestinal health.

When selecting fruits and vegetables, I try to buy locally grown. Its important to know how and where the food you eat is grown. Focusing on what is in season is a great way to utilize what we have available to us! As a side note: if possible please try to buy local strawberries, know the farmers who grow them. Strawberries are known to be sprayed often with pesticides so wash carefully!

So, for this week, I am showcasing :

THE STRAWBERRY!

The strawberry helps protect your Heart, increase your HDL (which is the good Cholesterol), and they fight cancer! Strawberries also help lower blood pressure. They provide high levels of anti-oxidants and 8 strawberries provide more Vitamin C than an orange. Strawberries are also a great source of manganese and potassium.

And, did you know the Strawberry is a member of the Rose Family? Crazy, huh? They were first propagated in Rome and in France thought of as an Aphrodisiac! Notice the heart shape?

Note: feel free to add of a dash of agave/honey/maple syrup if you like a sweeter drink. I prefer the natural sweetness of the strawberries and bananas.

  • 7 oz Almond Milk or Coconut Milk (I make my own Almond milk! More on that to come)

  • Ice

To Blend: I use a NutriBullet but you can use any blender you have
