Red Currants
Red currants is a type of berry. It was originally growing wild, but it is the cultivated currants that are best known. Currants are found in red, yellow and white berries, but its the red that are most common in Norway. As a berry, currants is one of the most hardy berries in Norway. pickling of currants has been known since the 1600's, and in the 1700's the bushes were very common.
Currants contain a lot of vitamin C and minerals, in addition to the substance pectin that makes it suitable for jelly and jam.
The Norwegian season is from July to September.
