It's the perfect season for the Apple Orchard, and what better to go with a juicy apple then some Homemade caramel! It's a very simple process and recipe with the best part being that the ingredients are super cheap and you probably have access to them right now.
What you will need
- deep shiny pot (deep to prevent splash burns, shiny to see impurities)
- Wisk
Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 1/2 tablespoons butter
1st step:
Pour the 3/4 cup sugar into the pot to make an even layer
Pour the 1/4 cup water into the pot
Wisk until all sugar is equally distributed and there are no dry areas
2nd step:
Turn the stove to medium-low heat
Dissolve the sugar into the water, the liquid should be clear and will start boiling
This step can take 5-10mins while stirring occasionally
3rd step:
You need to pay attention while stirring often during this step
Cook the sugar-water by turning up the heat to medium
The color change from clear to brown happens quickly and it’s very easy to burn the sugar if overcooked.
Once the liquid starts to get an amber color, and the bubbles have a film like appearance to them, remove from the heat
Put the 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter into the brown liquid and stir vigorously.
- Optional - add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to give it a vanilla flavor
You have caramel
Perfect for apples, especially Granny smith!
Total time to make: 30 - 40 minutes
