How to Feed Your Ginger Bug

So with all this cooler, that is rainy, weather I decided it was finally time to give another crack at a ginger bug. Between shredding the ginger instead of chopping it and the cooler temperatures I've got a perfect ginger bug on my hands, or it will be soon. I'll feed it one more time then it's finally time to harvest some and start some ginger beer! But for now, I show you how to feed your ginger bug.

It starts with a little pile of shredded ginger. The ratio is 2 tablespoons of ginger, water and sugar each time it's fed, which can be scaled up. I'm planning on starting a larger ginger bug tomorrow!

This is just how it looked before I did anything other than remove the coffee filter from the top, all nice and bubbly.

Add the ginger.

Then the sugar

Then the water...

See how you can see the layers? I stirred it up completely just after this.

It looks much bubblier now sitting atop my fridge as it's honestly been a bit chilly up on this mountaintop! Stay tuned for the ginger beer update, something I'm seriously excited for. Now, what's the difference between ginger beer and ginger ale?
