Halloween snacks

We had a Halloween party for the kids tonight, and prepared some spooky food for the buffet meal. Here's a quick run down of the snacks we made, with brief instructions for each one.

(All photos are my own)

Apple monsters

De-core and quarter the apples, then cut another chunk out of each quarter for the mouth, being careful not to cut too deep. Stick on chocolate drop eyes with butter cream icing, and insert almond flakes to make the teeth.

Cheese broomsticks

These are made with a small section of string cheese for the broom head, attached to a handle made of either a straight pretzel or a thin breadstick.

Satsuma pumpkins

Simply insert a small chunk of cucumber into a large pealed satsuma.

Boo-nanas

These ghosts are made from a banana, first cut in half along its length, and then in half across the middle. Stick on chocolate drop eyes and a chocolate button nose with butter cream icing.

Spider's web eggs

Hard boil the eggs, then make cracks in the shells without removing them. Soak the eggs in food colouring, then leave for at least 30 minutes. Rinse the excess food colouring off, then remove the shell.

Severed finger hot-dogs

Cook the sausages, then remove a thin slice from the end to make it look like the fingernail (A small piece of onion can also be used). Make small cuts at the finger joint positions, then smother the severed end with ketchup.
