Design For Food 為食物而設計
Design for food, like tableware and kitchenware, is not only products like glass bowls or pretty cups, but also from cutter, opener, fridges, and the latest technology - 3D food printers; or even packaging. In short, Design For Food is about all those products designed to prepare, cook, serve, contain and transport food.
You may confused with Food Product Design and Design For Food. This is because food products always come in a packaging, which is a result of Design for Food. So these two sub-disciplines, food product designers and Design For Food designers, are definitely linked.

Design for food Example#1 : Electric Pot / Rice Cooker 電鍋/電飯煲
The history of the development of electric pots, the earliest electric pot known as the direct heating electric pot, was developed by the Japanese brand- Mitsubishi in 1940. Hpwever this electric pot is only changed from fire cooking to electricity heating, People still have to wait at the side for rice cooked to cut off the power, which caused lots of inconvenience.
Toshiba's company president - Mr. Sanhe started to develop and set a new goal to "timing", meanwhile the rice can be cooked perfectly. After consulting and researching, they found out that the best cooking time for rice is using 98 ℃ to cook for 20 minutes. And the next question is how to maintain a cooker for a temperature for 20 minutes continuous and cut off the power after it.
Mr. Sanhe repeated experiments and tried the proposal suggested by Toshiba's staff , the original direct heating electric pot into the composite metal rod as a regular power switch, when the temperature reaches the boiling, the water will evaporation after 20 minutes (just a cup of water), the steam will gradually let the composite metal rods due to different thermal conductivity bending and then turn off the power supply function, at the same time, rice will be well cooked. But because of the rice is directly cooking inside the electric pot which is directly contacting with the air, heat power will be lost easily. Mr. Sanhe added a inner pot for rice cooking, by adding water between two pots to solve the problem of heat dissipation, known as the "three Pot thermo-automatic electric pot ". The rice cooker development has taken three years, in December 1955, Toshiba" ER-4 "was officially listed, which is the same form as Datong electric pot.
以電鍋的發展歷史來說,最早的電鍋稱為直熱式電鍋,1940年代由日商三菱開發,但此種電鍋只是將原本需要用火炊煮米飯的方式改成電力加熱,人還是必須在旁邊顧著等米飯煮熟就要切掉電源,有許多不便。
東芝的關係企業「光伸社」的社長──三並義忠進行電鍋開發,目標是加入「定時功能」,並能煮出好吃的米飯。詢問多位主婦米飯煮的好吃的訣竅,經過實驗證明,在強火下(98℃)煮20分鐘,米飯的澱粉會糊化使得米粒呈現最好吃的狀態,接下來的問題便是要如何使現行直熱式電鍋保持這樣的溫度持續加熱20分鐘自動斷電。
三並先生在重複實驗並接受東芝技術人員提案,將原本的直熱式電鍋加入了複合金屬棒做為定時斷電開關,當溫度達到沸騰後,水於20分鐘蒸發完後(剛好一杯份),滿是高溫蒸氣的空間就會漸漸讓複合金屬棒因導熱率不同彎曲進而達到關閉電源的功能,米飯也在此同時達到最好吃的狀態。但因為裝著米飯的電鍋外殼直接與空氣接觸,熱能容易逸散,因此最後三並先生在當中加入了內鍋,使用隔水加熱的方式才解決熱能逸散問題,稱之為「三層鍋間熱式自動電鍋」,開發至此花了3年,1955年12月,大同電鍋原型東芝「ER-4」才正式上市銷售。

Design for food Example#2 : Packaging 包裝
"Packaging is the key of product marketing." Any kind of product, through the "production", "market", "storage and transportation" to reach the hands of consumers, these are all involved in "packaging." Packaging is the link between production and consumption, to protect the product, speed up the transportation,and promote the consumption, it is a fusion of science and technology, and also creativity thinking of corporate behavior.
"Packaging" and "product" can not be separated. Good packaging is not only act as a protection to the product, but also representing the volume, shape, visual composition, description and use of design to be ingenuity, creative, which helps to improve the value of goods and establish the authority of the trademark.
包裝是產品行銷的戰力。任何一種產品,經由 "生產" 、"市場" 、 "儲運" 而到達消費者手中的過程均需 "包裝" 。因 "包裝"是連結生產與消費之間,用以保護產品,加速流通,促進消費的一種融合科學技術與藝術思想的企業行為。
"包裝" 與 "產品" 如影隨形是無法分離的。好的包裝不但具備保護產品的功能,同時對體積、造型、視覺構圖、說明與使用等設計要匠心獨運,富有創造性,提高商品價值,以建立商標的權威性。

Design for food Example#3 : 3D Food printer 食品打印機
