Here is when i entered the veg market , it is like 10 Minutes drive from my place! It was quite crowdy and very noisy! This atmosphere is just magical!

The varieties is just amazing! There is something for everyone for sure!!! You can notice on the picture : Lady fingers/Zuchinni/Gourd/Carrots/Beans /eggplant and the brown one is a root veg which we use in cooking curries and beignet. It is called 'Arouille'.

Next stop was at the most famous vegetable on the Mauritian gastronomy : Pomme d'amour is what we call it here! It is like small tomatoes but not as sweet! Mauritian uses it a lot, the price varies! You can get it less than a dollar for 500gms when in season and if ever the weather has been bad the price can go up to 6 dollars!

This is the Asian corner, where you get fresh chinese noodles, sprouts, green leaves, chives, sauces, etc... All that will go in the preparation of a fried noodles!!!

Spices is the main part of Mauritian cuisine! You can find all the different mix here! Curcuma, curry powder, cinnamon power, cumin, name it and they have it all!

Here we are next to the chili stall! This is a special chili, we call it 'piment carry' and I personally love to make beignet with them. They are a little bit spicy and can be very big sometime!

IMG_2818.jpg

Well well well, this is the local 'Olives' which is in season actually! We call it olives but has nothing to do with real olives! This one is super sour! The best way to eat them is to pickle them!

One of my favorite roots vegetables ... Tapioca!!! We call it 'Manioc' in Mauritius! Have you ever tasted fresh tapioca?

IMG_2798.jpg

Do you know this one? Called 'pipengailles' by the local and has the name of 'Sponge Gourd' in English! It's skin is quite rough and we make chutneys with it!

IMG_2816.jpg

Fresh coconut!!! What else!

IMG_2801.jpg

Potatoes!! In Mauritius we have 1 or 2 varieties of potatoes only unlike other countries! Sad!!!

Next local vegetable is one called 'Patole' or ash gourd in English! This vegetable is quite bland in taste but still very much appreciated by everyone!

IMG_2817.jpg

To end up I took some fresh curcuma which is a magical spice! In the cold weather, just infuse it with milk , it keeps you fit!!!
