Eating with less than 2$ in Venezuela #1: Pork Tongue

Hello friends of Steemit and welcome to the beginning of a new series of posts I came up while I was looking for cheap food to eat during the next two days.

As many of you probably know Venezuela is in the middle of an humanitarian crisis according to Humans Rights Watch, many other organizations and a lot of people.

Severe shortages of food make it extremely difficult for many people to obtain adequate nutrition. In a 2015 survey by civil society groups and two Venezuelan universities, 87 percent of interviewees nationwide—most from low-income households—said they had difficulty purchasing food. Twelve percent were eating two or fewer meals a day.

The idea of this series is to create and recopilate recipes that allow people in Venezuela to cook with less than 2$. I'm well aware that the price could sound crazy but it is, in fact, possible thanks to the devaluation of our currency the Bolivar.

So, let's go to the point.

In Venezuela eating the offal has become mainstream as well as eating animals that were not consumed before.

Many new dishes previously considered marginal, an expression that is usually used to refer to "disgusting lower class people", have been added to the diet of a large part of the population in order to survive.

Pork Tongue

Pork tongue usually gets passed over for cow tongue, cow tongue is quite frequent in areperas, an arepera is a place where you can buy arepas(filled or empty) just like a bakery is the place to buy bread. Pork Tongue is easier to prepare than cow tongue.

Ingredients

  • 2 Pork tongues
  • Half of a large onion or a small onion
  • 1 Normal carrot
  • 1 Fried tomato
  • 4 Small potatoes
  • Water
  • Oil
  • Salt

Servings for: 6 people.

Budget

The cost for pork tongues was 245,537Bs
The cost for the vegetables was 135,000Bs
The total cost was 380,537Bs the current black market Bitcoin dollar is 345,456.34Bs(this dollar is used to sell any cryptocurrency, like SBD or STEEM :), while the cost of a dollar in cash or wire transfer is cheaper since FIAT is soft money).

Using simple division we can get that I spend only 1.10$ making this food, and since it can be divided into 6 portions, we get a 0.18$ per person or portion.

Step 1

Put the tongues well covered with water and salt to taste in a pot. Close the pot and when it starts to boil leave 25/30 minutes depending on the size of the tongues to make them soft.

Finally, I served the pork tongue with half of a baked banana with its peel, rice and Papelón con Limón which is basically lemonade made with a kind of brown sugar.
