“One thing I love about the very early US was their weirdly earnest intellectualism/utopianism/classicism, which gives you all of these random farmers naming stuff after the Iliad and trying to write Homeric epics.” -- Scott Alexander

Another thing I remember from History about the early US was the vast herds of buffalo that grazed on the Great Plains.
There seems to be a fascination in the United States with the great beast also known as the Bison.
Or maybe that’s just me…
Anyways, I always heard stories of the near extinction of the species from the over-hunting of the creatures.
Often times, or so the story goes, the hunters would strip the beast of their coats and leave the rest of the animal for dead out on the plains.
Obviously, you can see that this was probably not the best course of action for several reasons.
It was harmful, wasteful, disgraceful… well you get the point.
Also this impact had cultural implications, if not motivations, for the vast destruction.
But let’s fast forward for now, to now.

The EPIC Company takes an antithetical approach.
As the above image explains, they “are focusing [their] energy towards better utilizing the entire animal!” in all of the products they make.
Now you might be wondering, but probably arn’t, that hey Michael, I thought you were vegan.
So why the post about eating meat?
But you will also recall, when I show you below, that I never claimed to be vegan strictly speaking:
In fact, this is a bit simlar to the story of the founders of EPIC.
“ODDLY ENOUGH, THE ROOTS OF EPIC WERE PLANTED SHORTLY AFTER KATIE AND I BECAME VEGETARIANS...”
The truth of the matter is that I am a hungry man and I require snacks every 15 minutes.
Well that last part isn’t true, but you get the point.
My wife and I usually pick up snack bars during our weekly grocery shopping trips.
After eating just about one of every single variety of the myriad of options in the “protein bar” aisle, we got tired of all the chocolate, peanut butter, and other whey based bars.
And so we jumped on the chance for change.
Enter EPIC.

EPIC created “the world’s first 100% grass fed meat, fruit, and nut bar. We call our product EPIC because it improves the lives of animals, regenerates our bodies, and helps heal the land. Due to an ingredient label unlike anything else, EPIC epitomizes real foods and will always be humane, pasture centered, and most importantly, delicious.”
And it really is that good!
They have a wide variety of different EPIC Bars including:
- Bison Bacon Cranberry
- Smoked Maple Bacon
- Chicken Sesame BBQ
- Beef Apple Bacon
- Turkey Almond Cranberry
- Beef Habanero Cherry
- Chicken Sriracha
- Pulled Pork
- Lamb Currant Mint
- Smoked Salmon Maple
- Venison Sea Salt + Pepper, and
- Wild Boar Bacon
They also have snack sticks which are “premium meat strips” that come in:
- Wagyu Beef Steak
- Smoked Salmon Maple
- Turkey Cranberry Sage, and
- Venison Sea Salt + Pepper
My crunch snack time favorite: Pork Skins that are flavored in your choice of Sea Salt + Pepper Pork Rinds, Texas BBQ Pork Rinds, or Maple Bacon Pork Cracklings.
I haven’t had them all, yet, and there are a few that are making my mouth water thinking about eating them!
Yum!
I think this is a wonderful and interesting time to be alive.
