Dr. Jones looked out over his class. They were an enthusiastic group with some understanding. Today he was going to give them a test in self control and discovery. It seemed simple for an upper division psychiatry class, but he tried this every year. This class was going to do better he thought with optimism.
So, he asked them, do we control our actions? Or are they controlled for us?
These were intelligent young adults, and they replied they had individual and self aware minds.
Alright, he told them, here's your assignment for the two days until our next class: You can not say the word "literally".
They were dumbfounded. No problem, they joked.
He had, per school requirements, listening apps turned on, on all of their cell phones and programmed to the word "literally."
They all used it by the second day. Well, except for the non-English speakers who were unsure of the class in general.
Five of the thirty-two members of the class admitted to using the word.
He was disappointed, but sadly, it was he expected. He was doing his research on basic human honesty.
