Escaped
She bent to place the rag in the bucket, rinsing grime from the torn rag. Sweat dotted her brow and she hummed a mindless tune as she wrung the murky water from the torn material.
Donelle ran the rag down the cupboard one last time and picked up the bucket. Walking out the back door, she dumped soapy water on parched soil, then brushed a strand of falling tendrils from her face with a hand where more than one callous plagued her.
This year was a new year and she had goals. The cleaning job was one of three jobs she worked to purchase the cottage she and Darla rented.
She walked to her car and set her bucket in the trunk. As she went to open the driver's side door, she heard a high pitched scream in the woods.
Alarmed, she looked into the woods in the direction of that blood curdling scream. Running in her direction was a young, thin girl with blood streaking both face and arms.
"Help, please, he's going to kill me! "
Donelle reacted instinctively and threw the back door of the car open, she saw a tall man clear the woods with a crow bar high above his head, his foot struck a downed limb and he went down hard. The girl made it to the car and Donelle took her arm and put her in the car, she slammed the back door and jumped in the front seat, starting the car.
Putting the car in reverse she peeled out the drive just in time to see the man pursuing the bloody girl raise to his feet and start running. She heard his angry roar as her tires hit the dirt road going 60 miles an hour and the girl sat sobbing in the back of her car.
