I have a love/hate relationship with Texas. Several family vacations were taken to Galveston, most of which were unpleasant outings. During high school, I played a variety of instruments in marching band (mainly because I cared more about marching than mastering an instrument) and we were a highly competitive unit that travelled. Dallas and Houston were frequent stops for regional competitions with Marching Bands Of America (MBA), so I had numerous trips there.
My sophomore year, we had a fun day at Six Flags in Arlington. I got stuck on the parachute ride, the band left me and another guy there and had to come back to get us. Needless to say, I have no fondness for amusement parks and could care less about Disneyland or Knotts Berry or Universal Studios.
Yes, I have a love/hate relationship with Texas. I like visiting Dallas, but not Houston. I enjoy the music scene in Austin, but hate South By Southwest (SXSW). I’m allergic to tourist season, yet appreciate all of the wonders that Texas provides.
Their BBQ is the stuff of legend. Their brand of Tex/Mex cuisine is top notch. The ladies are gorgeous there and the whole state seems super clean. The contrast between Oklahoma and Texas is nothing short of amazing.
Everything is bigger in Texas, but not necessarily better. Texas is probably where I would be living, if not in Los Angeles. Oklahoma is where I’m from, but I’ve never really identified with the “in-the-box” mentality that exists there. It’s hard to find forward thinkers or people that want more out of life than what they currently have. I’ve never been one to settle for what I have and am always striving to do more, to be more.
I don’t mean more stuff.
I mean more out of life.
More experiences.
More culture.
More cool cuisine.
More adventure.
More.
