Once you’ve been through Stage 1 – Research you’re ready to sit down and actually analyse all that data. This is where it helps to have a really good attention to detail so if you have some nerdish tendencies they will serve you well during this stage. Your objective here is to try and get an idea of how the competition might unfold and have an idea of where the betting markets might have overlooked something or otherwise made a mistake.
The easiest way to get started with Analysis is to look for patterns that might be trends. Maybe the performance statistics of a particular competitor are gradually increasing or decreasing and you can deduce that the trend might continue. Maybe the opposite is true and you can deduce that the competitor is consistently inconsistent. This kind of analysis is very useful too as it can indicate high variance in performance that can uncover other types of betting opportunities.

This is also where you start to cross reference the data gathered in the Research phase to see how the various factors may influence each other. For instance, looking at the weather and then seeing if it will suit the form of one competitor over another. Or maybe a news article might hint at a game plan that might favour one competitor or another.

I don’t want to give too much away because this is the stage where it’s common for professional punters to first develop their betting “Edges”. These are angles where you have an advantage over the market and they become things you look out for. Edges can become your “Bread and Butter” to feed into the next stage where you design your betting strategies, but they start out in the Analysis stage where you can identify a pattern or trend that the broader market has missed.

The hardest part of doing Analysis is absorbing and processing as much of the data as possible and then figuring out how the competition might unfold. I will often close my eyes at this point and I have also tried meditation here to see if I can visualise the contest with my minds eye. It can take some practise but I have found it can work if I’m in a quiet environment and the mind is uncluttered and focused on the contest.

Again for this stage it is important to have the betting market data on hand to have a look at, but we’re not selecting bets at this stage. When doing Anaylsis on betting market data the objective is to identify where the market might be getting it wrong and where good betting opportunities might present themselves.
