OST of the Day #38: LoZ Breath of the Wild - Rito Village (Day)

Hey Steemit!

OSTs are really underrated but they're so good, so I thought I'd share a song a day and my thoughts about it! I highly recommend listening while reading! 😊

It's been a while since my last Breath of the Wild (BotW) song so I thought I'd do another one! A lot of people say BotW doesn't have much music so it's kinda forgettable compared to other Zelda games but to me it's the complete opposite. Yes, most of what you'll hear in-game is atmospheric sounds, but that makes the songs that you do hear even more awesome and memorable! The song I picked for today is a great case in point.

Just to recap, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo. An entry in the long-running The Legend of Zelda series, it was released for the Nintendo Switch and Wii U consoles on March 3, 2017. Breath of the Wild is set at the end of the series' timeline; the player controls Link, who awakens from a hundred-year slumber to defeat Calamity Ganon before it can destroy the kingdom of Hyrule.

Here's the song for today:

BotW features an entire orchestral soundtrack, and the sound designers do it so well. There're majestic themes like Hyrule Castle (which I covered in my previous BotW post) and then there's more serene pieces like this one.
This song is called Rito Village, and the name pretty much says where you can find it in-game. There's quite a lot to unpack here but let's start with the song itself.

The song starts off with a gentle piano then joined in with an acoustic guitar and a clarinet giving a preview to the melody. It builds up to include the string section and windchimes at 0:28 before going into the main melody with what I learnt was a mandolin, supported with an acoustic guitar. Then the clarinet takes over with the piano, accompanied by sleigh bells. There are build-ups in between repetitions of the melody provided by the strings yet again.

Here's what a mandolin looks like. I'd say it's quite similar to a Chinese instrument I used to play (中阮), just that the mandolin has twice the number of strings. But they're also metal and it's plucked with a pick as well.

This song is so beautiful and tranquil but it is also very nostalgic for people who've played The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. I've personally never played the game myself since I never owned a GameCube, but I've seen 3 separate playthroughs of the game and I really enjoyed them. One of my favourite songs is called Dragon Roost Island (a classic from Wind Waker), and I'm so glad they remade it into this song!

When I first heard this song in-game I couldn't quite put a finger on what it reminded me of, but when I figured it out I couldn't help tearing up. The overall tone of this song is very different compared to the original, but it really suits the atmosphere of BotW, and it's just as amazing if not more. I feel like it conveys a calming and maybe slightly sad tone that really hits you with that nostalgia, but the clarinet makes you feel like you're right at home at Rito Village. 😌

Here's the original Dragon Roost Island! You'll find it is very different compared to Rito Village but still just as great.

Thanks so much for reading!
