OST of the Day #40: MapleStory - Snowy Village ☃

Hey Steemit!

OSTs make up the majority of the music I listen to, and they're so underrated I just had to share them! Feel free to listen while reading. 😊

Happy December everybody! It's that time of year again; when you can hear Christmas music everywhere. Personally, I really like Christmas music; it's so cheery and puts people in a good mood (except maybe people who work in retail 😅). Anyway, since 'tis the season, I thought I'd make this month all winter-themed songs! There's a lot of good ones out there, so let's just chill with some snowy songs while we round out 2019 yea.

Also, I can't believe this is the 40th OST post! Man, have I really written 40 of these already! 😲 Well, there's still a lot more to go and I hope you'll keep going with me on this journey! 😊

Anyway, like the title says, the song I chose today is from the very nostalgic MMORPG, MapleStory!

Just to recap if you're unfamiliar with this game, Maplestory is a free-to-play, 2D side-scrolling MMORPG, developed by Wizet. There were actually many different versions for specific countries and regions with their own publishers. I played the MapleSEA version which was published by Nexon and was released in 2005. Specifically I played the pre-Big Bang version (which was basically the first version in 2005) so I'm not too familiar with all the new-fangled jobs and maps they have now.

I remember I used to spend countless hours training and gaining exp for my character and sometimes I fell asleep on my keyboard training. 😅 When I got bored of grinding (which was a lot), I'd go exploring or just hangout with friends online. *sigh* good times... 😌

I've been thinking of doing another Maple song for quite a while and I thought it'd be perfect to start off the winter month with this song:

This is probably one of my favourite town themes in MapleStory. It's from a village called El Nath, and is only accessible if you take a boat from the mainland (Victoria Island) to Ossyria and either walk 20 floors down the Orbis Tower or use a teleport scroll.

When I wasn't on that part of the map (cos I was mostly training on the mainland), I remember just going to the Free Market (which used to be accessible in any town; I read that it got removed from the game completely) and going to the top with the snow-themed rooms just to listen to this music. It's just so relaxing and chill (yea I know I made that pun already); just listen for yourself!

It starts off with a windy-sounding, snowy/sparkly sequence before going into the melody provided by an acoustic guitar, with backing percussions (notably a triangle, tambourine and wood guiro). Then the piano comes with the second melody, with some electric notes as the harmony. The synthesised notes kinda overpower the melody a little bit, but the piano/guitar is still pretty prominent throughout the rest of the song, with strong backing percussions.

There are actually so many components to this song if you try to dissect it but they sound so amazing together. The spotlight constantly shifts from instrument to instrument, and there's so many backing sounds but you know if even one is removed it'll sound incomplete.

El Nath itself is soo pretty as well, and as someone who had never seen snow before, it was everything I imagined a snow village to be. The music is so fitting as well; making you feel warm even in such cold temperatures.

My fondest memories of this song will definitely be while exploring this region with my brother all those years ago. We used to teleport past strong monsters (yea mages ftw) to get to the end of the map as fast as possible. It was silly and pointless but fun nonetheless. I guess that's kinda why I like adventure type games; cos I love exploring new areas.
