Game Mode On! #001: Resident Evil Mercenaries

Resident Evil(or Biohazard as it is originally known in Japan).

Whether you're a gamer or non-gamer, that name should ring a bell. Not only was it released as one of the scariest games back in 1996, they've also made movie franchises that kept getting weirder and crazier than the last.

But I'm not here to talk about the movies.

Resident Evil starts off with Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.)'s Alpha Team in search of Bravo Team who went missing the day before in Arklay Mountains. After being chased by zombiefied dogs, Alpha Team members were stranded in a nearby mansion where the plot thickens. The mansion is eerie and like all horror games and movies, by suggestion or by force, your character will end up separated from the group. And we all know that's how characters end up dead.

Why, hullo there lone character... Source: giphy

Even opening doors and traveling up and down the stairs had this agonizing "loading screen" that keeps you on your toes.

In comes Resident Evil 4 starring the brooding and good lookin' Leon S. Kennedy(who was the main character alongside Claire Redfield in Resident Evil 2). Although RE4 had the monotone-horror filter look to it, the gameplay was different. Instead of the fixed camera angles in the classics, the player followed Leon over his shoulder at all times. The masses loved the change and was even deemed as one of the best games ever made.

Resident Evil 5 followed it's recipe of success by keeping the "third-person" play style and added a co-operative mode. This means that you could either play alongside a friend via "split-screen" or with a friend online. Or you could play alone with CPU Sheva (which I do not recommend). The news of a co-op player got me excited. Could this be my first Resident Evil game that I could play (with the assistance of @branlee87 because I'm terrified of horror games)?

Unfortunately RE5 ended up not feeling like a horror game but an action game. Fortunately though the game is still fun. There's also an extra game mode called "Mercenaries" where you're put into a fixed area and will have to try to clear the map of Majinis(this game's version of zombies) before the time runs out. And this is what has kept Bran and me coming back even after 9 years since the game has been released.

Currently we are aiming to achieve the rank "SS"(the highest rank) for each and every character for each map and we are very close :) There is no trophy given for such a feat but at least we'll have bragging rights. If people still care at this point.

We're very close to completing... oh welp. Source: giphy
