Garden Update

Good evening! It's officially the first day of July and summer is beginning to heat up. Temperatures reached over 100F degrees today and the heat wave will likely continue through the week. This afternoon I went outside to check up on my plants and give them some water. Although the ground was mighty dry, all of the plants were looking fabulous.

Cucumbers

In the photo above you can see a close up shot of a cucumber flower. I am currently growing two cucumber plants (both in pots) and one is beginning to get massive. Below is a look at the big boy. I bought a small trellis system for the plant to cling to and it seems to be loving it.

Hops

I have four hop plants growing up the sides of a trellis. They took a little while to adjust to the ground, but it seems like they are slowly beginning to adapt and grow. The plant seen below is the most advanced of the four. It has been climbing it's way up the trellis without any need for ties or branch training. I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do with the hops when they're harvested (I have never made beer before), but perhaps I will need to give it a try.

Pumpkins

My pumpkin plant is coming along well as you can see in the photo below. This is the first time I ever tried to grow a pumpkin. I have it in the ground, centered under my hop trellis. No signs of the actual fruit yet, but the plant seems to be thriving. I'm looking forward to some fresh homemade and homegrown pumpkin pie in autumn!
