The problem
We still have in steemit.com a small number of accounts authoring posts in spanish. Taking on our own statistics there are only 239 unique verified user accounts having ever posted original spanish content since we began the project @cervantes back in september of last year (08.09.2016).
The last three months (from 16.02.2017 until 16.04.2017), only 126 unique verified users accounts posted good quality original spanish content.
There are approximately 496 Million spanish native speakers worldwide from which 230 Million are social network users
That means that in steemit.com today there are 0.000098% of the potential spanish speaking user base.
The spanish user community have growth potential.
As for our own personal experience there are two main arguments we have successfully been using during the last few months to “convince” people to use the platform.
- (1) You can post for free your own original writing
- (2) If people like it and vote it you can earn money, real money
The problem is that the rewards delivered through organic voting for spanish posts is not enough to reach the same amount of payouts as in english. This has only been partially mitigated by some donors of voting power and by some other collaborative curating projects.
Conclusion: Promising author rewards is not enough to convince people to join and publish post in spanish to steemit.com
The Solution
An international spanish writing contest shall be organised and the winner’s prize should be high enough to gain enough media attention outside steemit.com and therefore attract new users to the platform:
- There will be a relatively long submission period. Let’ s say 3 or 4 months. Time enough to a) create the necessary “hype” b) facilitate word-of-mouth press and media visibility c) give time to the authors to write and submit good quality spanish content.
- The posts will be between 3 and 10 pages.
- Only posts written in spanish will be accepted.
- The posts should be original by the user/author and should never have been published in any other platform (printed or online).
- The posts shall be fictional stories of any genre (to be discussed).
- The users will need to create an account and subscribe to the contest prior to submitting their writing. A subscription mechanism should be then put in place. The contest will only take part if at least 500 different / identified users are subscribed to the contest.
- All posts should be submitted and published to steemit.com using a specific tag.
- It will be possible to submit only one writing per user/individual.
- All authors will need to undergo an identity validation to avoid plagiarism and abuse (to be defined how exactly to achieve this).
- There will be a main prize of $1000, second prize of $500 and third price of $250 to be paid in SBD or STEEM.
- The jury will be previously selected by the community.
How will you prove your project was a success?
There will be different KPIS:
- Number of initially subscribed participants: 500 or more will be considered a success
- Number of submitted posts: should be at least 375.
- New accounts: From these 500 participants at least 300 should be newly created accounts.
- New users remaining: From these 300 newly created accounts at least 100 remain active after the finalization of the content.
If these KPI are fulfilled, the project will have been a success.

Problema
Aún tenemos en steemit.com un número muy pequeño de usuarios que hayan escrito “Posts” en español.
Según nuestras estadísticas, tan solo hay 239 usuarios que alguna vez hayan posteado contenido original en la plataforma desde septiembre del año pasado (8 de Septiembre de 2017 - inicio del proyecto @cervantes).
Los últimos tres meses (desde el 16.01.2017 hasta el 16.04.2017) tan solo 126 usuarios únicos y verificados “postearon” contenido original y de calidad en la plataforma.
Hay aproximadamente 496 millones de personas que hablan español como lengua nativa de las cuales 230 millones utilizan redes sociales.
Esto significa que en steemit.com hay hoy en día tan solo un 0.000098% de los usuarios potenciales de habla hispana. La curva de crecimiento es enorme.
En los últimos meses han habido dos argumentos principales que hemos usado para “convencer” a la gente de usar nuestra plataforma
- (1) Puedes postear tu contenido original gratis
- (2) Si a la gente le gusta y te votan, puedes ganar dinero, dinero real
El problema es que los pagos generados por los posts en español aún son insignificantes. No hay muchas ballenas que lean y voten contenido en español lo cual se ha podido parcialmente mitigar gracias a la donación de voting power y gracias a proyectos de curación.
Los pagos "orgánicos" a los creadores y "cureadores" de contenido no son suficiente para que hispanohablantes se registren en steemit.com.
La solución
Un concurso literario internacional en el que los premios sean lo suficientemente relevantes como para llamar la atención de los medios fuera de steemit y por consiguiente atraer a nuevos usuarios:
- Habrá un tiempo de inscripción relativamente largo: digamos que 3 o 4 meses. Tiempo necesario para a) crear el "hype" necesario b) facilitar el boca a boca y la visibilidad y c) dar el tiempo necesario a los escritores para crear contenido original y de calidad.
- Los posts serán de entre 3 y 10 páginas.
- Sólo serán aceptados posts en español.
- El contenido tiene que ser original y nunca haber sido publicado antes en ninguna otra plataforma (impresa u online).
- Los posts serán relatos de ficción de cualquier género.
- Los usuarios tendrán que registrarse en steemit para inscribirse en el concurso. El concurso solo tendría lugar si al menos 500 usuarios se inscriban como participantes.
- Todos los posts tendrán que postearse usando un tag específico.
- Un escrito por usuario.
- Todos los participantes serán sometidos a comprobaciones de identidad para evitar plagio y abuso (el mecanismo habrá de ser descrito más adelante)
- Habrá un premio principal de 1000 SBD, un segundo premio de 500 SBD y un tercer premio de 250 SBD pagados en SBD o STEEM.
- El jurado será elegido por la comunidad previamente.
¿Cómo medir que el proyecto ha sido un éxito?
Podriamos definir varios indicadores,
- Número de participantes iniciales: 500 o más será considerado un éxito
- Número de posts inscritos: 375 será considerado un éxito
- Nuevas cuentas: De los 500 participantes al menos 300 deberán ser nuevas
- Nuevos usuarios adoptados: De las 300 cuentas nuevas al menos 100 deberán quedarse como miembros activos de la comunidad después de realizarse el concurso
Si estos indicadores son alcanzados, el proyecto habrá sido un éxito.
