There are many diseases and disorders that you will find among children nowadays and one of the rare disorder which causes significant trouble is the Down Syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21, being a disorder where genetic materials produce a delay in development of a child both physically and mentally. Down Syndrome disorder is not one and the same for all children, the symptoms vary from child to child, while some kids with down syndrome require medical attention on a regular basis, while some live a happy life in spite of Down Syndrome, but this is a rare case. Those diagnosed with this disorder are at the risk of getting cancer, thyroid diseases, and many other health problems. The behavior of an adult is like that of a seven or eight-year-old child. Like many other diseases, this one cannot be cured, but it can be identified before a child is born. The health problems that come with down syndrome can be treated and there are several health centers available to help kids and parents who have this genetic disorder.

What causes it? A little-known fact is that when a baby is born, he or she receives forty-seven chromosomes, one extra chromosome instead of forty-six, which once divided, boil down to getting twenty-three from the mother and twenty-three from the father. In short, Down Syndrome appears when the child gets forty-seven instead of the usual forty-six chromosomes in each cell which in process slows down the development of a child.
When pregnant, your doctor may suggest you take a screening test or a diagnostic test in order to see if your child has the syndrome. A screening test sends ultrasounds that decide if your child is diagnosed with down syndrome, although sometimes it may give results such as false-positive or false-negative.

There are mainly three types of Down Syndrome:

  • Trisomy 21: The most usual one is Trisomy 21, the one that’s very usual for children. For the Trisomy 21 condition, the production of cells has three separate copies of chromosome 21, rather than the usual two.

  • Translocation: Translocation Down syndrome is a condition which happens to a few people, and a very low amount of children are diagnosed with this. This happens when an extra part or a whole extra chromosome is present, but rather than being a separate cell it is attached to the existing cell.

  • Mosaicism: Mosaic Down syndrome is that type which accounts only for few percentage of people. The name is actually a combination of meanings, Mosaic meaning mixture or the combination. For children with this condition, only some of their cells have three copies and the rest has the normal two copies. This condition is close to the normal Trisomy 21 as children may have the same features as the ones with Trisomy 21.
