Belarusian mushrooms found to be contaminated with radioactive cesium

I love mushrooms. But I do not only love to eat them but also to find them. It is extremely important to know what you want to consume. Therefore I do really take only those I am sure that are eatable. The rest remain in the woods.

Having read the article about Belorussian mushrooms being stoped in France I felt that I have to share it with all who go and buy them in the supermarkets. The reason for stopping the shipments of Belarus mushrooms was the contamination with low-level radioactivity probably from Chernobyl and it was not linked to a radioactive cloud that appeared in southern Russia last month as the officials said last Thursday.

While the contaminated mushrooms did not represent a health threat to consumers, the shipment will be destroyed in a specialised incinerator in coming days, the IRSN said. "There is no link with the ruthenium 106 pollution," the official said.

Russia later confirmed it had measured ruthenium pollution at nearly 1,000 times normal levels in the Ural mountains, but did not acknowledge any accident.

"As the mushrooms came from Belarus, it is very likely the contamination originated in Chernobyl," the official said.

My only hope is that the contamination stays at very low levels. I pray for all my friends I have in Ukraine and Belorussia who are eating the local food that they stay healthy.
