My diabetes story - Part 2: The Plan

My diabetes story

At this point in the story, I have just been diagnosed as having diabetes, and am trying to work out how to deal with it.

This is part 2 of the story and continues on from a previous part. If you want to read the whole lot, please start at Part 1: Diagnosis.

This is my story about my journey to diabetes and back. It's what happened to me, and I'm not saying that this same thing will work for everyone, but I hope that if you're out there suffering through this insidious disease, maybe you can consider doing something similar and it works for you too.

I am not a dietician nor a doctor, but there are plenty of freely available resources you can check out online from actual doctors that may help you.

The Plan

I was given some pills to take (one Diabex XR 500mg, once in the morning). It made me sick. The doctor says this is normal and I'll get over it, but it's not having a noticeable effect on my levels.

After several cycles of taking the pills, measuring my BG (blood glucose) levels, going back to the doctor, and repeating, soon I was maximum dose of the pills (Diabex XR 1000mg twice a day), I was constantly sick, lethargic and still not below 15 mmol/L.

So they added another pill (Glycazide MR 60mg) which brought me down to about 12 mmol/L. They were hinting at my needing to go to insulin injections to get my diabetes under control.

I Can See the Light

One night, I went out with my wife for dinner. I'd been feeling sick all day and hadn't eaten much, I knew that according to the meal plan I was supposed to eat a lot of food, but didn't feel like making anything, or doing anything much so we went out to a steak place to get something.

I ordered a fatty steak, with avocado, vegetables and mashed potato. Half way through, I couldn't finish the last little bit of my steak and still had a few vegetables but most of my mash still on the plate. Despite absolutely adoring my vegetables and mash, I really couldn't force myself to eat any more, so we left and went home.

When I woke up in the morning, my blood sugar was finally “under control”, for the first time I had a BG reading of 6.8 mmol/L. Thank goodness that the pills are finally taking effect. For the first time in months, I was out of my depression, and could see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Back in the Dark

The following day I still felt a little sick, but I was in a good mood, because I the medicine was finally working properly. So even though I was feeling poorly, I was determined to eat correctly so that the treatment would still work.

The next morning, I woke up and did my BG test, and the depression returned, I was gutted. How can this be, my blood glucose levels were back up to the prior levels.

I talked to my wife, and said ”I can't work out why yesterday I had good BG levels, but today I am vastly over. I want to go back to the steak place and try that again, see if it's something in the food, I'll order exactly what we had the other night."

But we went back and had the same meal. This time my appetite was back and I managed to finish it all, but the next morning my levels were still high again. Damn, I thought I was onto something, but it must have been a fluke.

Next

Next part is What's Going On?, as a generally confused @triddin tries to make sense of the non-sensical.
