In the last week, much has been said in Italy about the death of Dr. Carmine Sommese, surgeon and Mayor of the municipality of Saviano, in the province of Naples.

The reason for this great interest is not only due to the fact that there is yet another death of a doctor caused by the Sars Cov-2 virus. The most important fact concerns the evident violation by the citizens (or at least a part of it) which, in contravention of the regulations on safety and social distancing, took to the street when the car with the Mayor's coffin passed.

To further aggravate the situation, the presence, documented by photos and videos, of law enforcement personnel on duty and institutional figures, such as aldermen and city councilors.
The event has not escaped all national media (I don't know if to the international ones too, tell me) and the governor of Campania Vincenzo De Luca has already issued a restrictive order valid until April 25 at least for the inhabitants of the municipality of Saviano.

I also speak briefly about this episode, because it affects me closely. I live in a neighboring town and therefore I could personally suffer the consequences of this reckless gesture. My parents knew Dr. Carmine Sommese well and they talked about him in a very positive way. A good doctor and also a generous person with right principles.

I start from a very important assumption: rationally, I consider the behavior of the inhabitants of Saviano absolutely wrong, inappropriate, dangerous and irresponsible. I think everyone present should take responsibility for these actions, mainly towards their family members and the categories of people most at risk. There were those who could (and should) avoid this gathering situation and didn't do it. For reasons of compliance with the law, for the protection of safety and for the respect due to those who have lost a loved one and have not even could greet him for the last time. Many citizens could have appeared at the windows and on the balconies, granting the right applause to Dr. Sommese, instead of doing what we have all seen. It would have been a worthy farewell anyway. But this didn't happen.

Having said that, leaving reason for a moment, emotionally, I must confess that the images of those people on the street moved me. I found it to be a touching scene...somehow romantic. A manifestation of closeness that went beyond everything, a tribute to a good person, really loved by his fellow citizens for having done something, indeed, a lot of good for his community.
Now that the right measures have been taken, they must be respected. And if anyone in particular has committed offences, he must be punished, there is no doubt about this.
But it must be acknowledged that in this sad episode, in addition to ignorance, lack of rules respect and poor civic sense, you can also find a pinch of humanity.

Inaccettabile irresponsabilità o profondo senso di umanità?

Nell'ultima settimana, in Italia si è parlato molto della morte del Dott. Carmine Sommese, medico chirurgo e Sindaco del comune di Saviano, in provincia di Napoli.

La motivazione di tale grande interesse non è soltanto dovuta al fatto che si conta l'ennesima morte di un medico causata dal virus Sars Cov-2. Il fatto più importante riguarda la palese violazione da parte della cittadinanza (o almeno di una parte di essa) che, contravvenendo alle normative sulla sicurezza e sul distanziamento sociale, è scesa in strada al passaggio dell'auto con il feretro del Sindaco.

Ad aggravare ulteriormente la situazione, la presenza, documentata da foto e video, di personale delle forze dell'ordine in servizio e di figure istituzionali, come assessori e consiglieri comunali.
L'avvenimento non è sfuggito a tutti gli organi di stampa nazionali (non so se anche internazionali, ditemelo voi) e il governatore della Campania Vincenzo De Luca ha già emanato un'ordinanza restrittiva valida almeno fino al 25 aprile per gli abitanti del comune di Saviano.

Parlo anch'io brevemente di questo episodio, perché mi riguarda da vicino. Abito in un comune limitrofo e quindi le conseguenze di questo sconsiderato gesto potrei subirle personalmente. I miei genitori conoscevano bene il Dott. Carmine Sommese e me ne hanno parlato in modo molto positivo. Un bravo medico e anche una persona generosa e dai sani principi.

Parto da un presupposto molto importante: razionalmente, reputo il comportamento degli abitanti di Saviano assolutamente sbagliato, inappropriato, pericoloso e irresponsabile. Penso che tutti i presenti debbano assumersi la responsabilità delle loro azioni, principalmente nei confronti dei familiari e delle categorie di persone più a rischio. C’era chi avrebbe potuto (e dovuto) evitare questa situazione di assembramento e non l’ha fatto. Per motivi di osservanza della legge, per la tutela della sicurezza e per il rispetto dovuto a chi ha perso un suo caro e non ha nemmeno potuto salutarlo per l’ultima volta. Tanti cittadini avrebbero potuto affacciarsi alle finestre e tributare il giusto applauso al Dott. Sommese, invece di fare quello che tutti abbiamo visto. Sarebbe stato comunque un degno saluto. Ma così non è stato.

Detto ciò, lasciando per un attimo da parte la ragione, a livello emotivo, devo confessare che le immagini di quelle persone in strada mi hanno commosso. Ho trovato che fosse una scena toccante...in qualche modo romantica. Una manifestazione di vicinanza che è andata oltre tutto, un tributo verso una persona buona, amata davvero dai suoi concittadini per aver fatto qualcosa, anzi, tanto di buono per la sua comunità.
Adesso che sono state prese le giuste misure, vanno rispettate. E se qualcuno in particolare ha commesso dei reati, va punito, su questo non c'è alcun dubbio.
Ma va riconosciuto che in questo triste episodio, oltre all’ignoranza, al mancato rispetto delle regole e allo scarso senso civico, si può trovare anche un pizzico di umanità.
