Vienna has a diverse range of museums. In addition to the renowned classical and modern museums, whose collections have an international reputation, there are a number of smaller museums that specialize in particular topics. Some of them are insider tips, which offer deeper insights into the respective specialty for enthusiasts and interested people. With this article I start a small series in which I present some of these museums worth seeing. It should be noted that not all of them have already reopened after the corona-induced closure.
Globen, Schokolade und Musikinstrumente Die Museumslandschaft von Wien ist vielfältig. Neben den renommierten klassischen und modernen Häusern, deren Sammlungen Weltruf genießen, gibt es eine Reihe von kleineren Museen, die sich auf ein bestimmtes Themengebiet spezialisieren. Manche davon sind Geheimtipps, die Enthusiasten und Interessierten tiefere Einblicke in das jeweilige Spezialgebiet erlauben. Mit diesem Beitrag starte ich eine kleine Serie, in der ich einige dieser sehenswerten Spezialmuseen vorstelle. Zu beachten ist, dass noch nicht alle dieser Sammlungen nach der Corona-bedingten Schließung wieder geöffnet sind.
Globe MuseumIn the Globe Museum of the Austrian National Library visitors can expect an exciting journey through time and space. More than 250 exhibits are on display here, including earth and celestial globes, globes of the moon and other planets as well as numerous astronomical instruments.

In addition to the history of globes, the visitor also learns interesting facts about their production. A further thematic focus is the development of terrestrial and celestial globes, from antiquity to the 1970s.
Neben der Geschichte der Globen erfährt der Besucher auch Wissenswertes über deren Herstellung. Ein weiterer Themenschwerpunkt ist der Entwicklung von Erd- und Himmelsgloben, von der Antike bis in die 1970er Jahre, gewidmet.
The pair of globes comes from Vincenzo Coronelli, who was born in Venice in 1650. He was one of the most important cartographers and globe designers of his time.

A focal point of the collection are the historical fortepianos, whose strings are struck and made to sound by wooden hammers. The fortepiano shown here, dating from 1781, was owned by Emperor Joseph II and is said to have been played also by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in front of a courtly audience.

This nail violin dates from the 19th century. On this instrument, the metal pins are struck with a violin bow that has a wooden resonating body. The different length of the pins also results in different tone pitches.
Aus dem 19. Jahrhundert stammt diese Nagelgeige. Bei diesem volkstümlichen Instrument werden die Metallstifte mit einem Violinbogen, der einen Resonanzkörper aus Holz besitzt, angestrichen. Durch die unterschiedliche Länge der Stifte ergeben sich auch unterschiedliche Tonhöhen.
