There is obviously no one-size-fits-all approach to this. Your answer may vary depending on the situation: the status of the rude person, your station in life, the frequency of rudeness, psychological makeup of the rude person and more.
You cannot handle the rudeness of the immigration officer the same way you handle the rudeness of a family member or a teenage boy. Likewise the rudeness of a person with mental health issues like depression must be handled differently from the rudeness of a normal person. Rude clients are another matter that needs careful handling. Sometimes people do act out of character for no apparent reason to the casual observer.
