Without wasting anymore time, let me go ahead to narrate how I spent the youth day...
The youth day celebrations in Cameroon, is a holiday which happens once every year on the 11-02-2022. It has been celebrated every year since 1966, and it is a holiday which aims at celebrating the role of the youth in National Integration and development.
The holidays actually began for me on the 10-02-2022 at 8pm (GMT+1). This is because we had a chance to listen to the President's address to the youths which was broadcasted on all national TV and radio channels. This has become some sought of ritual, as the President does this every year.
The speech was read for about 25 minutes, and it was great indeed. The president began by appreciating the youths for the role they played during the just ended AFCON (African Cup of Nations) which our country hosted, he spoke about COVID 19, He spoke spoke about the economy, and most importantly, he spoke about the creation of thousand of jobs so that youths in the country can be employed. This gave excitement to many youths around the country, everyone was happy. The President in his speech also specially recognized Francis Ngannou (Current UFC Heavyweight Champion) as a good example for youths to follow, thereby making our motherland proud.

Now we would usually go out to celebrate this day, but due to the Anglophone Crisis present in my region, it was declared a ghost town day. So we had to follow all the celebrations from the TV.
We woke up that morning very early, and did our chores as quickly as we possibly could. By 9am everyone was settled in the living room to watch the celebrations. It was very brief due to COVID-19 restrictions, but there was a lot of activities, with the highlight being the march pass parade. What a sight to behold, Cameroonians of all ages, ethnicity, background and tribes all coming together in a wonderful and very colorful display. A symbol of national unity and strength.
By noon, the celebrations were over, and all the dignitaries and personalities invited for the celebrations left for their various homes.
And so the celebrations ended. I felt very disappointed, as I was not able to take part in the celebrations. Before the coming of the Anglophone Crisis, this used to be a day every kid used to wait for in anticipation and excitement, but unfortunately since 2017, many have not had the opportunity of experiencing the celebrations again.
We can only continue to pray for our country, so that peace may return and the ongoing crisis be solved.
Thanks for reading 👊
