Art Attack! #32: Traipsing through Tulips 🌷

Hey Steemit!

We're back again with another Art Attack! If you're new to the series, this is where I share my paintings and the process behind them. A behind-the-scenes look at my artwork, if you will. This is not to say that I'm very good at art, or that I'm a professional in any way. In fact this is the opposite, and serves as a reminder to how I first started, and lets me track my progress too!

So back in March, Animal Crossing Pocket Camp had this Spring tulip event where you could grow tulips and make your campsite or cabin look like a tulip field in Netherlands.

They even had special tulip themed outfit and a cute flower crown wig you could wear! And I absolutely loved it; I knew the moment I saw it I had to have it for my villager. I'm still wishing Animal Crossing New Horizons would get wigs like these.

But the furniture and the flowers were all so pretty, and even though I'm not really a floral kinda girl I really like photos and paintings of flower fields, so I thought I'd paint something like that too.

Then I remembered that we actually have been to an actual flower field in Hokkaido, Japan, that was absolutely magnificent. It wasn't a tulip field, but it was still so colourful and nice.

So I decided to draw us walking in a flower field to immortalise that lovely memory. And I used this lovely acrylic painting by Jennifer Kwon as reference:

It looked like the kind of painting I envisioned in my head, and also seemed simple enough to replicate. Because man, there are so many beautiful tulip field paintings online it's crazy.

But anyway, it's sketching time!

With the angle of this tulips like the painting I referenced, it required some perspective shift so we were sort of walking down the path instead of head on. And I've been wanting to practise drawing in different perspectives so this was the perfect opportunity.

5.jpg

I did look up some tips on drawing in perspective but I think I might have made us too slanted so it looks like we're leaning back too much. And I think I made Sean too boxy looking because I was trying to replicate the style I did for the Valentines' piece again but I probably should've just drawn us like Animal Crossing villagers instead.

Either way I already outlined so it was time to try painting! I wanted to make the foreground tulips have an ombre colour which was perfect for watercolours.

It looked alright, but so far I wasn't really feeling this piece yet. I don't know, I think it wasn't looking like how I envisioned it in my head.

But we press on. I did simple heart shapes in different colours for the tulips in the background. And I did a gradient for the path.

7.jpg

Next was the background, and I made it look similar to the original painting, with mountains, trees and houses. Which is actually kinda accurate to our Hokkaido picture!

8.jpg

It looked decent enough still. Next, I painted the houses and us! I drew me wearing the same dress as my villager in Animal Crossing and for Sean I just drew a shirt that I might've seen somewhere before. We've talked about shirts that had 2 different halves like that and thought it was cool so I decided wthecc.

Time for details! I added windows and doors to the houses and drew the flower stems! I used watercolours before going over again with markers for this since I wanted it to be somewhat dark to resemble the denseness.

After outlining once more and adding shadows, here's the final piece!

Overall, I thought the colours were pretty well done in this. I think the perspective could've been done better and I should've drawn us better too I think. I wouldn't say it's bad, but I'm not too entirely happy with it either. I guess it's kinda meh. But I did my best at the time so.

Sean said he really liked it and that's what's important. And the thing about art is to just keep practising and that's what I'm gonna do!
