Art Attack! #62: Linktober 2020 Day 23 - Zelda! 👸

Hey Hive!

We're back again with another Art Attack! If you're new to the series, this is where I share my drawings and the process behind them. A behind-the-scenes look at my artwork, if you will. This is not to say that I'm very good at art, or that I'm a professional in any way. In fact this is the opposite, and serves as a reminder to how I first started, and lets me track my progress too!

So last week, I shared a piece I did for Linktober 2020! If you're unfamiliar with this challenge Linktober is a spinoff of the monthly art challenge, Inktober, where there's a daily prompt and you're supposed to do an ink drawing everyday based on the prompt!

I started this challenge a little late, from day 20, but I tried my best to keep up my streak. So for day 23, Zelda, it was an easy prompt but the next thing to figure out was which version of Zelda to draw! Hmm..

Since the sneak preview to the sequel of Breath of the Wild, I really liked the new look of Zelda with her short hair and I think most of the Zelda fandom really loved it too because there was so much fanart that week the trailer was revealed!

This one by mmimmzel was so awesome and cute so I tried my best to emulate it for my inktober piece for the day!

But I also wanted to incorporate the Silent Princess flower, since it basically mirrors Zelda's personality and disposition in BotW.

So this was my initial sketch to get the position and posture:

Then it was time to get to sketching her face! I was a little nervous because I can never draw humans right, but I tried my best and got this:

which evolved into this:

and finally this!

The pencil sketch actually looked pretty decent, so I went ahead with the outline:

and eventually I finished up with the colouring too!

I'm not sure what happened, but somehow after outlining and colouring it doesn't look as good as the pencil sketch even though I'm pretty sure I followed the lines exactly. I guess maybe it's just the style of it looking sketchy that made it look better too? But I personally prefer the pencil sketch a lot more. Maybe I should have outlined in thicker markers or something I'm not sure.

Either way, I had to use colour pencils for this since I needed a suitable colour for her skin, and I remembered colour pencils! I kinda have a love-hate relationship with them since they're really tiring to use and hard to blend nicely since I only have budget colour pencils. But I didn't really have much choice due to the paper not being paint-friendly. I liked how her hair colour came out though!

Overall, I think this piece was still better than I expected. I mean, I'm really bad at drawing people so I wasn't expecting much. But the pencil sketch turned out really well! Sucks that it didn't look as good in the end, but oh well. Just gotta practise more I suppose!

Thanks so much for reading!
