THE MARINA LOOKS LIKE AN ART GALLERY
This marina / harbor grew to become the size it has today because of the first seafarers who noticed the harbor centuries ago. The marina is a popular stop for those who are planning to cross the Atlantic Ocean. You will see that the marina is filled up with ships. I don’t think I have ever seen so many paintings in one place as here. The whole marina is covered in art made my sailors waiting for the right weather conditions. There must be thousands! I did not count, but I spend hours here without seeing all of them.
A SAILORS PARADISE
It's not only the marina that is interesting. Horta is a sailor’s city. Opposite the marina there are lots of cafes and restaurants with a maritime interior. One of them is Peters Café Sport. It’s a bar that also serves great food. I did have lunch here twice. The inside of the cafe is decorated with old charts, shark's teeth, pennants and postcards. Peters Cafe is a legend among sailors. Here they meet and tell their stories over a drink or two. The streets in the center are characterized by the fact that this is a maritime city. The café also has a scrimshaw museum in addition to the café. In this café you will find artefacts that are carved out of the tooth of whales. At the time I was here, it was closed, so I didn’t get a chance to visit.
THE STEETS OF HORTA
It’s worth taken a walk in the center of the city. The streets have buildings with facades worth a look. Some are old. Some are new and some are beautifully decorated with tiles that covers the whole façade.
If you have several days at your disposal, the island offers spectacular volcanic landscapes. The center of the island is dominated by a 400-meter-deep crater offering a spectacular view. I can recommend a visit to this amazing island.
