When I was visiting the Azorean islands in September together with friends, our main goal was to hike. On the island of Flores, which is the western most point of Europe, we stayed four days. This island is small, remote, but green and beautiful landscapes. To hike here, meant walking between pastures surrounded by fences made of volcanic rocks. Waterfalls, volcanic craters, steep cliffs and a rocky coastline. These islands have it all!

Because of rain and fog in the higher area we had to make desicions every day about where to go. On the rainy days we stayed by the coast, because it was more clear. One of these days we did a circular walk from Fãja Grande via Fajazinha and back. Both are situated on the west coast. Fãja Grande is where we stayed, which gave us a good position doing hikes both south and north of town.

We started our hike walking south along the coast to the small village of Fajazinha. The trail followed more or less the coastline. From here we turned inland towards the main tarmac road between Fãja Grande and the main city of Santa Cruz.

When we got to the main road we decided to take a small detour back and forth to the Poco Ribeira do Ferreiro waterfalls. We hadn't planned this in advance, but when we saw the sign that said 600 metres, we desided to do it, since it would only be a short detour. The trail turned out to be quite strenous. Uphill, rocky and with a slippery surface. But before we knew it we saw the lake and the waterfalls running down the mountainside. That sight did take our brath away. The fog did cover the top, but it was one of the most beautiful sights on our intire trip.

On our way back to Fãja Grande we choose the route that went more inland. We only had to walk a short distance along the tarmac road. Then we turned a corner to follow the trail back to town. Domestic animals like cows and sheeps were out on the pastures. Soon we got the view of the sea and knew we would soon be back in Fãja Grande. A great day hiking this beautiful island.
