Last week I told you about this 136 kilometer long trail in southern Norway. In the previous post I told you about our day 3, which is the section 3 of the trail. Today I will show you photos from day 4. This section runs from Laudal to Nodeland and has a length of 31 kilometers. But it's divided into two parts. Almost half way the trail reaches a lake. From here we could get on to the road leading to Kristiansand. At this intersection we had arranged to be picked up.

WHY DID CHILDREN WANDER THIS LONG WAY?
In my previous post I told you that the reason the children did this walk from west to east and from april to october was because of poverty. One doesn't know excatly why the Agder county suffered from such poverty that families had to send their children off to work. By doing this the families had fewer mouths to feed. This phenomenon went on up until the beginning of the 1900s.

LAUDAL TO HØYE
We startet in Laudal and are supposed to walk aprox. 14 - 15 kilometers. The part was along the river with farmland on one side. Before we started, we had checed a map and a description of the trail. When it was time to turn off from following the river, the description said “go left and follow a well marked trail”. We thought we did that, but we didn't see any marks that should indicate we were on the right track. After half an hour of walking in a deep and dark forest without finding any mark, we did turn back. Now we noticed the trail! It should have said "go straight ahead". But we were happy to be back on track, we continued.

The day before when we ended the third section, it was at Konsmo Church. At the time when the children walked the trail, they didn't do that by them selves. An agent would gather them at meeting points on the way. One of these meeting points was Konsmo Church. There is a small museum here, telleing the story, but it was closed when we arrived. But we know from written information that some of these children were very young. Some came to farms where the were good to them. But we also know that some was sexually abused and maltreaty. The whole trail follows the originally trail, so in a way we walking in the footsteps of these children. This is a little piece of history from southern Norway.
