If there is a place that you want to visit while in Banda Aceh, it is the Baiturrahman Mosque. We need to know that the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is a cultural and religious symbol of the Acehnese people. Baiturrahman Mosque which is located in the center of Banda Aceh City. Known for its splendor and majesty as well as the beauty of its stunning architecture and until now it has become an Aceh icon that has become the world's attention.

Baiturrahman Mosque was founded in 1612 AD / 1022 Hijriah during the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda of the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam. This mosque is a witness to the history of the Acehnese people and remains strong even though it was hit by the 2004 tsunami.

At first the Baiturrahman mosque was not only used as a place of worship but also as a center for studying Islamic religious education. When it was colonized by the Dutch in 1873, the Baiturrahman Mosque was used as a defense for the people of Aceh. Where the people of Aceh expanded its function to the basis of resistance. At that time the Dutch troops were led by General van Swieten.

In the history of this mosque was destroyed by Dutch troops in 1873. The destruction and collapse of the Baiturrahman mosque sparked the anger of the Acehnese people and they fought to defend this mosque to the last drop of blood. Then this mosque was rebuilt by the Dutch on the orders of General van Swiete. This development was carried out as an effort to reduce the resistance of the Acehnese people to the Dutch. This development process was carried out in 1879-1881 AD.

The Baiturrahman Mosque underwent several expansions, the first of which occurred in 1936 by order of the Governor-General A.Ph van Aken, building two domes on the left and right sides of the mosque. Furthermore, the expansion was carried out again in 1958-1965, this time the expansion only added 2 domes and 2 towers on the west side. Then in 1992, 2 domes and 5 towers were added.

Meanwhile, on (24/12/2004) Aceh province experienced a 21 meter high tsunami that hit the coast of Banda Aceh, this mosque is a building that survived the incident although there was some minor damage to some parts of the mosque. The earthquake was slightly tilted and caused cracks in the tower which was about 31 meters from the main gate.
