Steemit Travel Contest Week #1 - The Most Beautiful Beach in My City | Keurboomstrand Beach

Keurboomstrand Beach

South Africa, home of the most beautiful coastline and beaches.

If you talk about a beach and a city there is only three cities in South Africa along the coastline of 2,800 kilometers. From the Eastern side to the Western side the first city will be Durban then Gqeberha (previously known as Port Elizabeth) and lastly the Mother City of Cape Town.

Along the way you will find plenty towns and also smaller quaint and charming resort towns.

Today I am going to introduce you to my favorite and most beautiful beach, Keurboomstrand beach or the direct translation "Keurbooms Beach".

This beach is to be found in Keurboomstrand on the famous “Garden Route” of the Western Cape.

The name Keurboomstrand was taken from the “keurboom” tree with its pretty pink-mauve flowers and which grows in the area.
The word “strand” is the Afrikaans (my native language) for “beach”. The true meaning of Keurbooms is “Choice”.

Keurbooms beach is still relatively unknown to many which makes it extra special. Here you can still smell the ocean and feel the warm sun baking on your skin.

The beauty of this beach is endless. Not only does it stretch over a long distance on the one side and the ocean on the other but it also includes beautiful plants, rock formation, interesting caves and spectacular views of Plettenberg Bay, the main town and Robberg Peninsula marking the point of landscape.

Plettenberg Bay and Robberg Peninsula

Early morning starts with a quiet stroll from the main beach to the east as far as Matjies River. You have to take this walk during low tide or else you want be able to cross the rock formation nor the ocean.

If you do this early in the morning the sunrise is absolutely breath-taking.

You will stop at Arch Rock. If you were clever enough and bring a flask of coffee this is the ideal spot to have it.

Arch Rock was formed over many years through the wave action. What makes it unique is that it has a small hole above the main arch.

It is said that if you can manage to through a stone through this hole it will bring you good luck.

Arch Rock, rock formation

I call it “heaven on earth” as so easily one can forget about life and the happenings in your life. Best you don’t get too carried away as you have to get back to the main beach before high tide.

Keurbooms beach is playground for young an adult from swimming, fishing, kite surfing, watching dolphins swim right by you or just being lazy and basking in the sun while eating ice cream.

If you are lucky you will be able to see whales coming in from the deep ocean to give birth to their babies in the bay.

Strolls to the west will be done at dusk. If you think the mornings view was spectacular you will not have words when you see the sun goes down.

Sunset on Keurboomstrand

For those who are too lazy to do the walk a visit to the well-known Enrico’s restaurant is a must. Here you sit with a glass of wine enjoying a meal while watching the sun goes down over the Keurbooms beach.

“Choice”? For us it is not a choice to visit Keurboomstrand beach but an absolute must!
