Choices! What will it be? #22 Mirrors

When I was a lad, I can vividly remember a time when I met my mum looking at herself in a plain object with shinny surface. When I got close to the object, I saw a reflection of myself. To me I felt it was my twin in the mirror. Anything I do, the image formed would do. I gave it this scornful look and it gave me back.

I touched it but couldn't feel its body. I started wondering how and why and even wanted to break it for imitating me not until my mum stopped me and defined what the the object is for is for me. Want to know what the object is? Mirror, mirror on the wall is this object. Why is it always on the wall, in front of or beside the wall I sometimes ask myself.

Mirror

A mirror is an object that can take any form be it flat, round, triangular or otherwise which is reflective and can depict the exact appearance of objects when light rays strike on that mirror. That's why you can see yourself during the day because light from the sun or day shines on the mirror whereas in the dark, it can be seen except light is reflected on the object.

This mirror consist of a sheet of glass that's reflective and shinny and has an opaque back. Images are formed behind the mirror and can also create virtual images of objects. There are various types of mirrors. These include;

  • Plane Mirror: This type of mirror is flat and has a smooth surface. Light can be reflected without distorting the shape of objects that appears on the mirror. This kind of mirror produces virtual images which means the object size and distance are the same. It's just like you standing in a mirror. You won't look bigger or farther than how you appear on the mirror. Examples of plane mirrors are mirrors in bathrooms, dressing rooms and other wall mirro.

  • Concave mirror: This kind of mirror differs from plane mirrors because it can magnify images when objects are close. Examples are shaving and markup mirrors. Images formed curve inwardly.

  • Convex mirror: Unlike the concave mirrors, this curves outwardly making images appear smaller instead of big.

  • Decorative mirrors: This kind of mirrors are used for interior decoration.

  • Magnifying mirror is also a type of mirror.

Mirrors can be applied in various ways. I remember those days in high school where I was taught mirrors in physics and how they can be applicable. We were taught reflection and refraction which bounces on a smooth surface usually a mirror to reflect ways. This is illustrated when someone points a torch on a mirror and its rays bounces back and use another direction to transfer the light to another medium.

Practical application of mirrors

Mirrors can be applicable in various ways and for various purposes. The below shows howcand in what ways mirrors are used or applied.

  • One of such applications is the use of mirrors in our homes for grooming when shaving, applying makeup or checking faults in our clothes or body.

  • It's also used for interior designs

  • Drivers value the use of mirrors in their vehicles when driving to help them see other vehicles behind them so as to enhance safety.

  • They are also used as an integral object in optical instruments like microscopes and telescopes.
  • One-way mirrors are used for security purpose as it allows observers to see without being seen by others.

  • Mirrors are also used by magicians in creating mirror effects, illusions and tricks to make objects disappear or multiply as we do see in some videos and movies.

Experiences using mirrors

I've not had much experiences looking at the mirror though I do feel mirrors do like or make people that are beautiful appear ugly. Funny enough though. There's this instance I wanted checking myself in the reflective surface of a car body. As I stood, guess what? I was enlarged. The closer I went, the larger it became. I was not comfortable with it so I left.... Remember our popular snow white story and how the which used a mirror to know who the fairest is in the land.

This is what I can come up with concerning mirrors. To the ladies in the house, I know you find it pleasurable anything you see your face on the mirror wearing makeup. In summary, mirrors are not just used for self gratification. They are used for various purposes even in the movie and entertainment industry.
