It is interesting to know how a tag is different from a hashtag. A tag is used by the algorithm/SEO to categories your blog or post or video to display in the feed of other users of a social media. A hastag is used by the users to find a topic or content which is trending. A hashtag of a trending post is called a trendy hashtag.
Proper hashtag may expand one's reach and get more engagement of post, increasing followers than usual. Using irrelevant hashtags or too many hashtags, will not help your SEO and could seriously hurt engagement.
Hashtag creates a page of all posts having the same hastag. When same hashtag is put into search the hastag page open up with all posts in trending order. Normally while writing a hashtag a list hashtag appears below in auto writing mode with total no of times that hashtag has been used.
Hashtag are of two types. One of the types may make a topic trending. Others may use the hastag to be discoverable by search. This can lead to a great engagement of your brand.
Ideally hashtag should not be more than 10 characters and simple without any punctuation or sign except number with out any space in between. Hashtag may be placed any where in post and the post with hashtag is duly indexed by the social media network. X created first the hashtag function #. Canva's hashtag generator is free.
However YouTube says hastag is important to check the correct spelling. In fact UT studio display that views from hastag page is very negligible of total views.
Hastag may be general as well as unique that created for specific purpose to announce an event or promotion of film or product etc.
Most common hashtags used in Steemit platform. Steemit allow upto maximum eight hashtags. Generally only seven can be given.

Though you can't own a hashtag but you can register a hashtag. It may help in solving any dispute in future.
