I decide to write about desks. Because with the desk I have many childhood memories of my school, that's why I chose it. So let's start blog properly to take a look at the history of desks
Desks have a rich history from ancient times. Desks have no proper shape. These are just simple platforms or tables like tops which keep small items of daily use and for writing purposes. Desks Basically, the word desk originates from the Latin" word "Desca" in Medieval times. The word Desca was used at that time for "table to write on". Initial desks had no proper shape. Mostly desks had a top like today's table without any storage space. In the Medieval ages, desks started to take their shape. Desks of that time were generally made up of simple wood material.
In the Renaissance period, desks gradually changed their shapes. During this period of time, desks were ornamented with carving. Beautiful designs made of expensive wood materials. Mahogany , walnut and oak wood are used for desks formation. These were the essential parts of the furniture in high class society.
Ornamental details and expensive wood materials used in the formation of desks reflect the status of their owners. After this period of time, desks develop to provide a more efficient workplace which includes some drawers and little cabinet like space for the storage of documents and writing so that scholars can have easy access to these.
During the 18 and 19 centuries, desks have become popular and accessible to the public.
Due to the Industrial revolution, mass production started and desks became more common.
The 20th century was a time during which the evolution of almost everything reached at its peak. The same is true in the case of desks. In this time, desks with many shapes sizes evolved. They have different types of storage places, seating arrangements and keyboard trays for computer. Adjustment of technology like place for computer screen,CPU and boogers was made in 20th century.
Some sorts of standing desks are also available in the market. Use of metals along with wood materials is common in the market. From just writing top, desks made a long way of progress for multiple purposes. Now these are essential parts of our furniture. These are widely used in houses, offices, schools, colleges, airports, hospitals and in many other public places. Such a wide use of desks shows their importance in our lives.
Whenever we enter an office, hospital, school, college, university etc, we first ask for a reception desk where we get basic information about the relevant institution. After visiting the reseption desk, we go to the main office of principal, vice chancellor doctor or any other officer. We meet their multi-purpose executive desks before we meet a relevant person.
I have many memories related to desks as I told you people earlier. In my primary and middle school, we used desks in every class. These are long tables like desks without any compartment made up of wood and nails only without any other material.
In my high school, we were provided with some new designed desks. Those desks have proper sitting arrangements with two drawers and a small compartment on one lower side of it. Many times I took some snakes from the school canteen and hid them in the draws. Whenever my teacher went to some other corner, me with my friends and we entertained ourselves with those delicious snakes.
Desks are significant in many ways. But whenever we think about a desk, the first idea which comes to mind is a table top with books, table lamps, some paper pens etc, which make them a symbol of educational purposes along with creativity and focus. Where you sit just to do the work which you need to do without any interruption
Desks have a long history in past thousands of years, but we can say that it was Medieval ahead during which it took its proper shape and was used for proper purposes. And now these are in their most developed shapes and are serving their best. Desks of many designs, sizes, materials are available according to our need. We came across many types of desks and are familiar with these. These are one of the oldest companions over a period of thousands of years.
