Introduction

The word Jam comes from the Arabic word Jaman and the meaning of Jaman is to preserve. Jam is a food which is prepared by cooking fruits with the sugar to preserve it. It is a sweet and soft food. It is eaten with bread. There are different jams such as strawberry jam and raspberries jam. There are jam sandwiches as well.

History

Jam has a long and interesting history. Jam was firstly introduced in the Middle East. Actually in the middle East the preservation process of fruits was discovered firstly. They discovered the preservation of fruits with the addition of sugar. So guys this preservation of fruits with the addition of sugar is known as jam and it was firstly introduced by the middle East.

Throughout history jam has played a significant role. It is important in various cultures and cuisines. In Europe, it became very popular during the reign of Middle Ages. It was that time when sugar became more widely available. It was considered a luxury item. It was enjoyed by the nobility often. Let me tell you an interesting thing about the jam which makes it more significant and shows its great history. Queen Victoria of England was great lover of the jam. She was fond of strawberry jam. She has particular strawberry jam for her use.

The process of making jam has evolved over the years. Different techniques and changes developed for the making of the jam in different regions. Different cultures have their own making procedures and formulae for the making of the jam. Some traditional and historical methods tell that firstly simmer the mixture of fruit and sugar. For the mixture large copper pots are used. These large copper pots help to create a rich and concentrated flavor. Nowadays, modern techniques have made the process more efficient. Different equipments are used for the making of the jam and to get the desired taste. But the basic principles and laws for the making of the jam are still same. But the recent technology and facilities have increased the making speed. Because we have now electronic mixtures as well as robotic work which helps us to catalyse the work and to make in a hygienic way.

There is an interesting thing about the formation of the jam. It can be made with both fresh and frozen fruits. So the jam has the versatility that it can be made in each season. This allows you to enjoy your favorite fruits even when they are out of season. Homemade jams are also great. The formation of the jam at home allows us to experiment with different flavor combinations. We can add flavours according to our wish.

Step by Step Procedure of making jam

Making jam is simple and interesting. Here is a basic procedure of making jam:

  1. Start by selecting your favorite fruit. We can choose strawberries, peaches, or blueberries.
  2. Then wash and prepare the fruit. Remove any stems, seeds, or pits from the fruit.
  3. Then crush the fruit according to your desire.
  4. After that combine the fruit with sugar in a large pot. Then squeeze lemon juice on them for acidity.
  5. Heat the mixture over medium heat and keep on stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  6. Once the mixture reach at the boiling temperature, reduce the heat.
  7. To check if the jam is ready you can perform a spoon test. In the spoon test put the jam in the chilled plate. If it stays at the plate with the thickness then it is ready.
  8. When the jam reaches the desired thickness then remove it from the heat. Now cool the jam slightly.
  9. Transfer the jam into clean and sterilized jars and seal them tightly.
  10. Allow the jars to cool completely before storing them in the refrigerator.

Jam is used as a tasty spread. Jam also has some practical uses and benefits. It can be used as a glaze for meat. It works perfectly when the meat is combined with savory ingredients. These savory ingredients maybe mustard or vinegar. Jam has its own unique sweet taste. And it adds a touch of sweetness to the dishes. And it helps to caramelize the surface of the meat. This caramelized surface of the meat due to the jam creates a delicious crust which makes the meat more delicious and tasty. Jam can also be used as a filling material for crepes. It is used for pancakes. It adds more taste to French toast. So jam is used for adding a burst of flavor to these breakfast treats.

When the children go to school the mothers give them breads filled with jam so that they can eat the breads as the lunch with the additional taste of jam. Jam is used in the cakes and biscuits as well. I brought a cake and the baker wrote the name at the surface of the cake with the thick jam. So guys jam has vast uses.

When we talk about the different types of jam there are endless possibilities of jam. But the most popular types of jam are strawberry, raspberry and apricot. These are widely used all around the world and mostly the strawberry jam among these. There are also more unique and exotic flavors of jam available. We can get jams made from the different fruits from different zones. We can get jams made from tropical fruits like mango or pineapple which are the most delicious fruits of tropical areas. We can get jams of even unconventional combinations like fig and balsamic vinegar. Some traditional jams are made from the local fruits. And these local jams give the unique flavor of a particular region. So there are a number of types of jams but it depends only upon the choice of the user. In my area the strawberry and mango jam is used mostly.

Jam is a delightful and versatile spread. Jam has a rich history. Jam has been in use for the last many years. Jam is enjoyed all around the world. It is used in different ways. We can spread it on toast,. We can use it as a filling. Jam adds a wonderful fruity taste to all the things on which it is used. There are different ways of making jam and we can get different types of jam if different fruits. We can also have a jam with the combination of different tastes to get another unique taste.
