The force that pulls items toward the ground is known as gravity . An airplane needs to produce enough lift to overcome gravity in order to stay in the air .
This is why maintaining altitude requires that airplanes go forward and maintain a specific speed . An airplane experiences resistance known as drag as it travels through the air . For the plane to fly quickly and efficiently drag must be kept to a minimum .

Wheels and struts make up the landing gear which is what makes it possible for an airplane to safely take off and land . Retractable landing gear is available on some aircraft and it can be folded during flight .
