What is “social media” in your life, and how many hours a day do you spend on it?

In today's digital world, as per our current experience, social media has become an ordinary part of our lives, allowing us to connect with anyone, whether it be friends, family, any kind of relationship, business, etc. However, we share any kind of experience, feeling, or anything else and are updated based on events, situations, things, and thoughts on social media. It spends a lot of time scrolling through feeds or reels, making statuses, posting pictures or videos, and also interacting on these virtual or digital platforms.

I slightly used social media platforms. Most of the time, I tried to engage in several other jobs that occupied me. I took at most an hour or two to be on social media pages. However, digital things or media also lead to certain troubles to our mental health. It is necessary to find out how that reflects on our lifestyles. In my opinion, we have to maintain a healthy balance between social media platforms and the real world.

Name five ways social media can have a negative impact on your life and that of your loved ones.
  • Addiction: Addiction to social media usage leads to a lack of real-life connections, non-productivity, and solitude. If notifications or other disturbances constantly bother a user, they might overlook what makes life worth living. Users may overlook necessary aspects of life, such as face-to-face interaction or togetherness, resulting in a loss of humanity and human rights and values.
  • Mental health issues and Insomniac: A number of studies found social media can make relationships with depression, feeling lonely, low self-worth, or even worse–suicide. Such delayed social media usage also affects sleep, causes tiredness, and leads to other diseases.
  • Blackmailing: People take advantage of online social media channels like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter to generate fake accounts for engage in harassment and bullying.
  • Privacy Concerns: A privacy breach can happen when one user misuses information from another user in the public domain.
  • Misinformation: Fake news or information on social media can spark panic in society through unnecessary confusion and violence.

If you had to implement 5 rules to make sure that social media became HEALTHIER in your environment, what would they be?
  • Schedule time limits and Avoid late-night use: Reduce the daily usage of social media. Set a reasonable daily screen time.
  • Turn off notifications and practice the digital cure: Shut down your phone’s social media alert feature. Do not post everything and stop spending too much time online; instead, channel your efforts into something else in life.
  • Check your privacy settings and Report abuse: Use the privacy settings to keep most people, especially those not related to you, from viewing your posts or private information others post about you. Ensure that you identify and report any bullying or harassment on the various social media platforms.
  • Fact-check: Make sure that someone’s content spread on social media is genuine and based on the truth.
  • Ensure your emotional well-being: You know that you have to look after yourself and even your mental health too. Involve yourself in activities or hobbies like exercise, art, music, etc.
