Starting with greetings and respect. I am @jebanikajeba. Today, I am writing today about the native Nakshi Kantha of Bangladesh, which is a part of our culture. Nakshi Kantha is an excellent creation of folk art. Folk arts like kantha are helpful in every day life. Nature, the economy, and the climate all are related to Nakshi Kantha.
Kantha, like other folk arts, is helpful in daily life. Nakshi Kantha impacts climate, environment, and economy. A kantha was first made by joining several pieces of cloth together. From this finally came Nakshi Kantha. It is said that Nakshi Kantha speaks of the mind. Because a simple cloth is mixed with the sweetness of the mind, various designs are made, including flowers, vines, leaves, etc.
My in-laws are in a village in Gazipur district. Most of the women in the village are skilled in Nakshi Kantha sewing. Village women make Kantha by sewing their thin and old clothes in layers. Kantha means is a classic example of frugality.
A new necessity is created by combining several old things. Old sarees, lungis, and veils are used for making kantha. Besides, some people buy new clothes from the market and sew Nakshi Kantha as a hobby. Especially when a small baby is born, they make nakshi kantha of various designs to hold the baby.
Nakshi Kantha can also be given as a gift. Nakshi Kantha is stitched mostly in spare time. I have also stitched several Nakshi Kanthas with my own hands.
Although I was not very good at it, my mother-in-law taught me to sew kantha. She can stitch all kinds of Nakshi Kantha. I have stitched it with old cotton fabrics like sarees or veils used in my home.
First, I folded many cotton sarees and veils in several layers. In Kantha, the middle part is usually designed first, and the perimeter is done later. Earlier, wooden blocks were used to draw designs in Kantha. Now, tracing paper is used.
Then, I stitched the kantha with threads of different colors. I have also gifted my friends and relatives from my stitched Nakshi Kantha.
