The front fins are hard, with a leathery lining covering the fins, and some insects rub these parts together to produce heat. The hind fins are membranous and can be folded for flight. The largest insect in this family is the bull beetle which is 5 cm 2 inches long.

More than 900 beetle species have been identified; The group Grilida is distributed all over the world except in the latitudes of 55° and above. But most of its varieties are found in tropical areas. This call is actually made by males to attract females. Again there are some species which cannot make sound. Those who can sing or call also have good hearing because they have knees

across the ocean or on floating wood or debris, or by human activities, they have spread to many large and small islands.Many members of their subfamily live on high branches of trees, in shrubs, and in grasses and shrubs. Some of them live in soil and caves. Many of them live in shallow or deep burrows underground. Some nest in rotten trees.

Beetles are defenseless. Their body is soft. Some beetles dig shallow holes in rotting trees or soil and hide by burrowing their antennae into it. These burrows are temporary residences, maybe for a day but others are their permanent residences where they mate and lay eggs. They use their strong jaws to loosen the soil, then push it with their hind legs or move it with their head.

Some species have adapted colors, shapes or patterns that make them difficult for their predators to see or catch.They are brown, gray or green in color to match where they live. The color of dead insects is like sand .Dead insects are colored like sand . Some species can fly with wings but it is incomplete so they flee and hide quickly to avoid danger
