SEC-S6W2: "I Am a Teacher"- As A Coaching Center Teacher

Greetings Everyone, This is SHOHANA From #Bangladesh

As a teacher I served almost 10 years long and I start teaching as a private tutor. Yes, it was for money because I was a student too and I start teaching in 2009. I was very nervous when I start it because I was a student too. Some family only hire students as private tutor for their kids to save money as school teachers charge big amount for private tutoring.

At the beginning I didn't find it more interesting as my starting was with a class 2 standard student who was a boy and very naughty. Once she bite on my hand but I didn't mind. I've funny experience by teaching kids and later I enjoyed beside making money. I did struggle almost to get tuitions because it was not available for a student like me.

In 2020 when I say "Good bye" to private tutoring after being a private tutor for 10 years long. Private tutoring helped me bearing the expenses of my own study and I complete my post graduation with the money. I've experienced of teaching school students 1st standard to 8th standard as I've no need to practice to teach them but once I also teach a neighbor little sister who was in 11th standard.

In January 2020 I decide to build my career on IT so I came to Dhaka city for sake of earning my living but getting job was not easy for me at the beginning. So I decide to join a coaching center but they were unable to pay my monthly expenses but I need to start something so I joined there. I met there cute little girls and they were school students.

Though it was for money but they didn't pay me my salary for almost two months of teaching. Corona pandemic shut down the coaching center and I start seeking another job online as I did when I was a tutor and student too. I became jobless but I never called them to pay my salary of two months because there were more needy teachers who were teaching there for long time and remain unpaid.

It was not all about money as I was in love with kids and they gave me love and respect. My subjects of teaching was almost all the subject with math, English and drawing. After completing the class I also gave time to my students for practicing creativity and they draw different object around them that they like.

One of my student draw my picture with few heart shapes that was really sweet so I decide to take photo of it and also the photo of the artist student of mine. Her name is Choya and she was in 4th standard. I also had boy students but I've shared their photos in my some other blogs so I decide not to share them again. At that time I was not active in steemit.

Whose teacher are you? Do you teach for a living?

I was a teacher of school students, in a private coaching center. Most of the time I was a teacher of kids. I love spending time with them but yes once I did it for my living but it was not enough for my living but helped me a lot bearing my educational expenses.

What challenges have you faced as a teacher?

Kids are very over emotional so its hard to deal with their emotions. I tried never make them cry and make fun to make them smile all the time. As I said at the beginning a student of mind bite on my hand with his sharp teeth but it was not so serious and I didn't punish the boy for this but his mom scold him for this. I face challenge when I teach a student of 11th and I need to practice math for her. As a student of science my math was not bad so a little practice helped me a lot.

Sometimes things can be challenging and honestly as a teacher I also faced. Some guardians want teachers to complete the syllabus over a night and it was hard to make them understand that a teacher can finish a syllabus but as student as a little kid needs time to understand each lesson properly. Once I teach a student for 20 days and leave and they didn't pay me because I left. It was stressful as guardian of the student was acting immature and I decide to give up. So I left without asking for my money as the guardian committed.

How do you create a learning environment that is both stimulating and supportive?

As a teacher I was never strict and boring and give space my students to practice their creativity. To make lesson easy I try to explain more than once or twice. After completing lessons I offer them a break. I reward my students for their better performance in exams. I often gave good luck wish pen when my students go for an exam.

I tried to be a friend of my students and made a friendly environment for them most of the time. Some of my students studied for 3-4 years long under my observation and showed the best performance in their examination.

What professional development opportunities have you pursued to improve your teaching practice?

Practice make us perfect so after teaching 3-5 years you going to be confident and an expert teacher for your students. I did practice math, science and English more to be a good teacher for my students at the beginning and later I found it super easy and I enjoyed being a teacher of students.

To improve the quality of teaching study is the only way beside that understanding the student type and teat them accordingly is also important. Some students will understand when you will explain once but some may understand after explaining the same thing 10 times so having patience is most important to be a good teacher.

At present, higher education is very expensive. What is your opinion on this, or is there any alternative to it?

Its true that teaching is now more than a business and higher study is expensive. So my opinion about it, we shouldn't make education system a source of business and make fees flexible for students. Teachers who had higher study and no tension of earning livelihood can serve poor students for free.

My aim after making decent amount of money I'll be a farmer and also a teacher for poor students for free, if I can afford I can build a school for free education but those are only possible when I will be financially stable completely. I think many teachers should have such aim to help building education for a nation.

Undoubtedly teaching is a noble profession but still its a profession and teachers also need money for their living. Government schools and colleges has good facilities for teachers but still many teachers sake of extra income launching coaching centers and treating educational system like a business which is not good.

Many poor students can't afford bearing their educational expenses and professional teachers give their efforts in the coaching instead giving full efforts in the class. Dark side of teaching profession is that, teachers are getting commercial as a result we can't expect a better nation in the future.
