Clay art is an art in which clay powder is artistically shaped, then dried in the sun and then placed beside the fire to get heat and to make it hard and usable. In the first age of natural products clay was used for making household items like plates and bowls. Then, it gradually showed its beauty and became an art. In this clay art, artists reveal their hidden artistic side.

This art is still practised in various rural areas of Bangladesh. Those involved in this art are called Kumars. Clay art is still practised in different districts of our country. Notable among these are Rupganj in Narayanganj, Dhamrai in Dhaka, Comilla, Cox's Bazar, and Barisal. Apart from this, it is prevalent in other districts as well.

Some of the products produced by this industry are various household items, many furnishings, toys, flower tubs, show-pieces, various statues etc. Various beautiful terracotta patterns in the Kantji Temples of Mahasthangarh, Bagerhat and Dinajpur prove artistic traces of our earlier civilisation.

With the passage of time, as the scope of modernity increased, the demand for clay art decreased a lot. Gradually, this industry is almost disappearing. Many have left this profession and are working as autorickshaw drivers, van drivers and daily labourers. With government and private patronage, this industry can once again regain its lustre. Also, we all should not use plastic, ceramic, melamine and use of these products made from the soil of our country will help sustain this industry.
