As far as my understanding of steemit in the context of rewarding content is concerned, originality of the content is the prime focus of curators.

Originality of the content does not bar you from making use of resources that are available online for the better understanding of any desired topic. Feel free to consult as many sources as you want for making your posts look cool. But make sure that, you do not forget to mention the source of the content. If you make use of any content from any source without mentioning that source, it will amount to plagiarism, which means that you have used someone's work without giving credit to that person.
Another way to understand this concept is that, suppose you have created some content and you published that content offline in a book or online on some website. Suppose a third person uses your content for his benefit without mentioning your name or source where you have published that content. This irresponsible act of that person amounts to an offense known as plagiarism.
Let me further elaborate this concept by taking fishman's definition which says that.
Plagiarism occurs when someone:
- Uses words, ideas, or work products
- Attributable to another identifiable person or source
- Without attributing the work to the source from which it was obtained
- In a situation in which there is a legitimate expectation of original authorship
- In order to obtain some benefit, credit, or gain which need not be monetary.

This won't amount to plagiarism because I have mentioned that I have taken this definition from the mentioned source. Had I used this definition without mentioning its source, it would have mounted to plagiarism. Same rule applies to images also.
