There are total of 4 different keys and master password on steemit. It provides a different level of control/permission on the account and needs to keep safely.

It is used to perform below actions-

2. Active key

It is used to perform below sensitive actions related to your funds-
transfer funds, power up/down transactions, convert Steem Dollars, voting for witnesses, updating profile details and avatar, and place a market order.

3. Owner key

It is used to perform below actions-
To change any key of an account e.g. posting and active key. It can also be used to change owner key itself. it is meant to be stored offline (flash or hard drive) or print on a paper and only used to recover a compromised account.

4. Memo key

It is used to perform below actions-
To encrypt and decrypt memos when transferring funds. For encrypting a memo, need to use # sign before it.

5. Master Password

It is used to derive all keys for an account, including the owner key. If someone gets to your master password, they can steal your account and all of the tokens of your account.

Master Password should be stored offline i.e. flash or hard drive or print on a paper.
