Daily Menu Delicacies 06-01-2024 // SFENJ - A classic Moroccan doughnut, perfect for tea time!

It was after such a long time that I had Sfenj for tea time…

So what is Sfenj!?!

I discovered this delicious fritter when I first travelled to Morocco back in 2015…

Sfenj is a light, spongy ring of dough fried in oil until golden brown and crisp.
It is usually eaten plain, sprinkled with sugar, or soaked in honey and here I even tried it with Nutella! So delicious indeed!

Very popular in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia as well as Libya!

It is a well-known dish in the Maghreb and is traditionally made and sold early in the morning for breakfast or in the late afternoon accompanied by tea.

In Morocco and Algeria, it is known as Sfenj, in Tunisia it is named Bambalouni and Sfinz in Libya.

But loved everywhere!

Simple and easy ingredients…

To make sfenj, you will simply need the following:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 cup warm water
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

If you want the full details on the dough recipe, I invite you to check this post I made 6 yrs back where you will find the step by step preparations:

Here my wife is starting to fry the sfenj…

And the sfenj is fried on both side in hot oil.

The frying time is only 1 minutes or so, it becomes brown and crispy quite rapidly.
