Palazzo Doria Pamphili is one of the most imposing palaces in the center of Rome. The building dating from the seventeenth century houses the Doria Pamphili Gallery, an exhibition with an impressive collection of sculptures and paintings. The palace and art gallery are named after the Pamphili family (or Pamphilj) who through the alliance with the Doria family became known as Doria-Pamphili.

Palazzo Doria Pamphili is located on Via del Corso, near Piazza Venezia. The oldest parts of the palace date back to the 15th century. Over time it was extended by members of Rome's most illustrious families, such as Rovere, Aldobrandini and Pamphili. In 1601 the palace became the property of Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini who decorated it with a series of paintings that would lay the foundations of the art collection that is on display today in the palace. Around the same time, the palace was expanded, with several wings of the building.

Through marriage, the palace came into the possession of the Pamphili family, who still use it as a residence. The current appearance of the building is almost unchanged since 1734 when Don Camillo Pamphili renovated the facade on Via Corso, hiring the architect Gabriele Valvassori to restore it in Rococo style. He added a few rooms that were decorated in the same exuberant style. The palace also benefited from a series of extension works, being today the largest private residence in the center of Rome. It is a real complex composed of five courtyards, being bordered by four streets and two squares.

The Doria-Pamphili family opened part of the palace to the general public, including some of the most opulent private apartments. The apartments are reached through a beautifully decorated courtyard. Inside, the rooms are adorned with paintings, chandeliers, sculptures and ceilings decorated in the most impressive way possible.

Among the first rooms to visit is a bathroom, decorated with statues and murals. Next, you can admire the Jupiter room where you can see chairs from the eighteenth century, then the Poussin room whose walls are completely covered with paintings depicting beautiful landscapes.
