2021 Piazza del Quirinale a Roma

One of the beautiful squares of the city, Piazza del Quirinale is located near the palace of the same name, the place that hosts the President of Italy. In the center of the square is the Dioscuri fountain.

Palazzo del Quirinale and Piazza del Quirinale are located on top of the highest of the seven hills of Rome. From the highest point of the city, you can admire some of the most beautiful views of St. Peter's Basilica.

Besides the special view, you can also visit other things in the area around Piazza del Quirinale. The square has buildings on three of its sides, the fourth being open to the city at the foot of the hill.

The Obelisk and the Fountain of Castor and Polux

The first thing that catches the attention of tourists in Piazza del Quirinale is usually the large obelisk and fountain in the middle of the square. The latter is known as the Dioscuri Fountain and is decorated with statues of Castor and Polux.

They are 5.5 meters high and depict the two in the position of horse pushers. The statues are Roman replicas of Greek statues from the 5th century BC. and were in the past placed at the entrance to the Baths of Constantine. The 14-meter-high obelisk once occupied a place of honor at the entrance to the Mausoleum of Augustus. The statues were placed here in 1588 by Pope Sixtus V.

The obelisk was added in 1786 and the granite basin of the fountain was added in 1818. The basin was designed by Rafael Stern who used a kind of Roman shell that he took from the Roman Forum where it had acted as a gutter.
