on a previous trip to Northern Italy
I had the opportunity to visit Burano

a small but colourful island about 7 km from Venice

And more specifically a group of four small islands
connected by a series of bridges

The only way to reach Burano is by boat and as a tourist
by the "vaporetto", a Venetian sea bus from St. Mark's Square

Despite its rich history from the Romans to the people from Altino
the island is also well known for its small, brightly painted houses

The colours of the houses follow a certain system
that comes from the early stages of its development

and when someone wants to paint their house
must send a request to the government,

which will respond by announcing the specific colours
allowed for that particular lot
