Il grandioso complesso è un mirabile esempio di barocco Lombardo e presenta una struttura unitaria e compatta chiuso attorno ad una corte quadrilatera.
Dalla piazza si accede all'esedra ,elegante teatro che funge da proscenio scenografico della dimora seicentesca, sulla quale si impone la facciata principale ,rigorosa e caratterizzata da un'estrema semplicità senza alcuna ricerca decorativa, che cela al suo interno importanti cicli di affreschi seicenteschi a tema mitologico con cornici a stucco.

L'edificio sorse per volontà di Borromeo III Arese ,nell'anno 1654 e subì varie aggiunte, realizzate con armoniosa coerenza rispetto al preesistente.
Sorta sulle tracce di una torre difensiva di Cesano l'edificazione fu all'inizio come residenza di dimensioni contenute, ma venne ingrandita con l'accrescersi dell'importanza della famiglia Arese che fu capace di mantenerne Integra la fisionomia, grazie anche alla permanenza della stessa famiglia nella residenza per oltre 3 secoli.
