Lanterns of the Odessa Opera and Ballet Theater, what are they famous for?
A bit of history: The first Opera House (1810-1873) was lit by gas horns. This theater burned down completely on the night of January 2, 1873.
A landmark event was the construction of the new Opera Theater (1884-1887). The theater was the first building in Odessa to use electric lighting from Edison's company . Electricity became firmly part of the everyday life of the residents of the city.
In the publications of the early XX century you can see reports that "the streets are lit by gas, and some by electricity. Almost all public and private institutions, as well as many stores, have electric lighting" (1911)
So, I shot the electric lanterns, as well as the facade of the building.
The theater building is in the style of the Viennese Baroque.
Two tiers.
In those distant times, contemporaries noted the advantage of the new Opera House. These are "comfortable seating for spectators, electric lighting and excellent ventilation."
A substation was specially built for the theater on StaroPortoFrankovskaya street.
